A HISTORY OF HOPE

Our Legacy

For over two centuries, the African Methodist Episcopal Church has stood as a beacon of resilience, spiritual liberation, and unwavering faith. The City of Refuge carries this sacred torch forward.

Born from a profound desire to serve both soul and society, our history is etched not just in the walls of this sanctuary, but in the lives of the community we uplift. From our earliest gatherings to our modern ministries, we have remained a steadfast spiritual home where history meets hope.

Our Story

Founded on September 10, 2014, by Pastor Leroy Anderson and Rev. Angela Anderson, City of Refuge A.M.E. Church was established with a vision of creating a Christ-centered community where people can find hope, healing, purpose, and belonging.

Located in Glen Burnie, Maryland, City of Refuge is a welcoming congregation committed to living out the love of Christ through worship, fellowship, discipleship, and service. Our guiding philosophy is simple: "Come As You Are." We believe everyone is welcome, valued, and loved, regardless of their background or life experiences.

As a congregation within the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, we are passionate about spiritual growth, leadership development, and building strong families. We offer ministries for men, women, couples, children, and Christian education, creating opportunities for every member to grow in faith and serve with purpose.

Beyond our church walls, City of Refuge is deeply committed to making a positive impact in the community. Through partnerships with local schools, nonprofit organizations, and neighborhood communities, we provide school supplies, food assistance, holiday outreach, youth programs, and volunteer service that meet both spiritual and practical needs.

Whether you're searching for a church home, looking to deepen your faith, or seeking a place to serve, City of Refuge A.M.E. Church is a place where faith grows, lives are transformed, and community thrives.

We invite you to join us and experience the love of Christ—just as you are.
